New Materials for solution to packaging systems for foods and pharmaceuticals

The department "Materials Development" at the Fraunhofer IVV, Freising customizes polymer films and fiber composites with barrier properties and active functions by processing thermoplastic films, vacuum coating, lacquering, and laminating. This gives rise to layer systems with medium and high barriers to permanent gases and vapors. From these semifinished products the Fraunhofer IVV develops novel packaging systems for foods and pharmaceuticals.

Range of services:

  • Extrusion of films up to seven layers
  • Vacuum web coating of polymer surfaces including activation via plasma treatment
  • Lacquering and laminating of web substrates
  • Integration of active components for binding condensation, controlling headspace moisture, oxygen absorption, and releasing antimicrobial agents
  • Development of packaging concepts based on biopolymers
  • Permeation analytics
  • Characterization of the physical properties of packaging material
  • Modeling of the permeation properties for developing multilayer concepts with defined barrier properties
