Innovative packaging and bag systems

The Branch Lab for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Dresden works on solutions for the intelligent shaping and the reliable thermal bonding of flexible materials. Different technologies are available for these processes, e.g. ultrasonic, laser and vibration assisted heat sealing. That causes the development of innovative packaging systems like bags for different applications for the food, medical device, pharma and cosmetics industry.

Reliable bonding technology for flexible materials

• Evaluation of sealing and welding processes and process optimization of packaging materials during ultrasonic sealing, vibration-assisted heat sealing, laser sealing
• Support with the selection of suitable films
• Research of the mechanism of action and root cause analysis in sealing and welding processes
• Analysis of the heating behavior of sealing tools and flexible materials using thin section microscopy or high-speed infrared thermography and fine wire thermocouples
• Simulation of the heating and deformation behavior of plastic films during bonding processes in collaboration with TU Dresden

Diagnostic and measurement systems

• Development and selection of measuring systems, from definition of the requirements to the industrial implementation under application-related and reproducible simulation of process conditions
• Evaluation of the processing behavior of packaging materials under realistic process conditions as well as under defined load conditions, e.g. friction and flatness
• Evaluating analysis of packaging machinery and plants regarding their efficiency and processing costs
• Analysis of machine failure / product damage and evaluation of hazards
• Development of novel, efficient technologies
• Assistance with the selection of suitable materials
• Process optimization from preheating to forming

Easy opening packaging systems

• Determination of opening forces under realistic conditions by using standardized test methods
• Evaluation of the opening behavior with regard to user friendliness
