The Fraunhofer IVV focusses on high-quality food products and safe, effective, and convenient packaging systems, efficient use of raw materials and minimal environmental impact as well as transfering the technologies and expertise to applications outside the food and packaging industries.

The business units of the Fraunhofer IVV cover Food Processes and Products, Food Quality and Sensory Acceptance, Compliance of Packaging Materials, and Processing and Packaging Machinery. It is also involved with functional ingredients for foods, animal feeds, and cosmetics, functional materials for food packaging and for technical applications such as ultra high barrier films for OLEDs. The Fraunhofer IVV's work portfolio also considers the efficient recycling of byproducts and waste in the Biogenic Raw Materials and Recycled Plastics business units.

The Branch Lab for Processing Machinery and Packaging Technology of the Fraunhofer IVV in Dresden is involved with the analysis, development, and optimization of machine processes for the mass production of consumer products with the focus on processing of natural materials and plastics in sectors such as the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as packaging material production. The work covers the totality of machine processes, from the starting material to the final packaged product, e.g. developing solutions for reliable thermal joining of flexible materials having easy opening functionality or designing hygiene-optimized processing machinery. Developing technologies for shaping packaging systems from flexible packaging materials and also diagnostic tools for ensuring the reliability, quality, stability, and flexibility of resource-efficient packaging processes is alsp part of the lab's portfolio.
