The innovative “lab in a bag” for the cultivation of stem cells will be exhibited for the first time at the joint booth of the Fraunhofer Group for Life Sciences at the Biotechnica 2017. With LabBag®, the three participating Fraunhofer institutes IBMT, IST and IVV have developed a mini-lab in the form of a plastic bag, which has significantly increased the cell count and the process reliability.

A lot of hopes are pinned on human stem cells in modern medicine since human pluripotent stem cells can form any type of cell found in the human body. They are virtually irreplaceable in the field of renewable therapies and as model systems for cytotoxity tests and medicament developments.
Three Fraunhofer institutes have made it their goal to produce these stem cells inexpensively and safely. Within the context of a joint research project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV including its Dresden branch are working on the development of a so-called ”lab in a bag”, a closed, surfacebased cultivation system for stem cells.
